The battery is located on a bluff on the Waccamaw River at the Laurel Hill Plantation, now on the property of Brookgreen Gardens, a sculpture garden and wildlife preserve in Murrell’s Inlet, South Carolina. Brookgreen Gardens is made up of four former rice plantations: The Oaks; Brookgreen; Springfield; and Laurel Hill. Laurel Hill is the northernmost of the four former rice plantations. Access to the Laurel Hill portion of the property is restricted to a tour called the Trekker Excursion, which operates from March to November. In addition to the battery, the tour also visits a plantation cemetery and a rice mill chimney.

The Trekker is a small open-air bus. The bus drives over several severely rutted dirt roads and the ride was very bumpy. I sat on the left side of the bus when facing the driver. Passengers are not allowed off the bus at stops.

This is the fourth post in the series- Coastal Defenses in SC- Winyah Bay- the final post will cover the Wachesaw Plantation Battery.
