There are several sites in the city of Fernandina on Amelia Island that are relevant to the Civil War. The museum will be covered in a separate post.
Chloe Merrick was an abolitionist who opened a Freedmen’s School on the island. She also organized an Orphan Asylum

The Williams House was built in 1856. During the war it was owned by Marcellus Williams. Williams was a friend of Confederate President Jefferson Davis who once stayed at the house. It was also a stop on the Underground Railroad. The house was used by the Union as a headquarters and an infirmary during the war. It is now a Bed and Breakfast.


The church was garrisoned by Union troops during the war.


Dr. John Lesesne treated soldiers in his home during the war.

Built in 1857 the Florida House Inn housed Union officers.


The Amelia Island Lighthouse- seized by Union forces in 1862. It was a refuge for former slaves, free blacks and white Unionists.
