The 29th CT- the First to Enter Richmond

Pine Grove Cemetery- 15 Church Street Ansonia, CT

William Burr Wooster was born in Oxford, CT, graduated from Yale Law School and was elected to the CT House of Representatives from the town of Derby. However, Colonel Wooster is best known as the commanding officer of the 29th CT volunteer infantry regiment, the first Black regiment recruited from the state.

So many men volunteered for the 29th CT that 400 of them became the 30th CT volunteer infantry regiment. The 29th served in Beaufort, SC, and in Virginia where they were the first Union infantry regiment to enter Richmond when the Confederate capital fell after the siege of Petersburg. Subsequent to Lee’s surrender they served as guards at the Point Lookout prison in Maryland, and in Texas and Louisiana.

The pictures below are of the monument to the 29th CT which is in Crisculo Park in New Haven (41.3031667, -72.9044000), where the regiment trained.
