Arlington National Cemetery- The Visitor’s Center

If you are driving a car the only practical choice to park is the King Drive parking garage (38.8822290, -77.0634620), which charges a fee to park. There is also a stop at the cemetery on the Metro. You cannot drive a car through the cemetery unless you are attending a specific burial and in that case you must drive straight to the site of the burial service and then exit. A private company operates a series of tram trains that stops at 7 or 8 of the main sites such as the Kennedy grave site, the Arlington House, and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier (shown below). The trams leave from the visitor center. Tickets can be purchased in advance online or at the cemetery for the tram tour. Entrance to the cemetery itself is free. The day I went the tram did not stop at the Ord gate which is near Section 27. The NPS has an app called ANC Explorer for the cemetery which is searchable for specific graves.

If searching for one of the smaller white headstones it was helpful that on the back of the stone is chiseled the section number followed by the grave number, which can be obtained on the app. You can also use the app to generate a map of multiple visit sites. To enter the visitor center and the cemetery you must pass through metal detectors. There is a gift shop and bathrooms in the visitor center. Bathrooms are also located near the Arlington House and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Shown below are images from exhibits covering the Civil War in the Visitor Center.
