The Bell-Marsh House originally stood near the corner of 9th and Elm before being moved to its current location. There is a gash on the door that was allegedly made by a Yankee soldier with his saber.

John Beaty became a Lieutenant in the Brooks Rifle Guards the first Confederate company organized in Horry County. He was accidentally killed by friendly fire while on a night patrol in 1865 by Captain Samuel Bell. During the Federal occupation of the town the house served as a residence for several Union officers.
