Coastal Towns in South Carolina- Hilton Head Island- Fort Mitchel

The fort is located at 65 Skull Creek Drive on Hilton Head Plantation. It was constructed shortly after a Confederate raid led by John and Rollin Kirk on December 6, 1861, crossed Skull Creek and succeeded in carrying off provisions and former slaves. The fort was designed to protect the north end of the island from future Confederate naval attacks originating from Bluffton or Savannah. There were as many as six guns there but they never fired a shot against Rebel forces. When I visited access was easy to obtain. I drove up to the gate and stated I wanted to visit Fort Mitchel. They gave me a pass to put on my dashboard and I drove to the fort. There is a small parking lot located there.
