Torreya State Park/Gregory House

Confederate Army and Naval officers visited the Gregory house during the war. Some of the victims of the CSS Chattahoochee were brought here for medical care after its boiler exploded on May 27, 1863, and the ship sank.

The Gregory House, built in 1849 by prominent Calhoun County planter Jason Gregory, originally stood across the Apalachicola River from its current location in the park. Gregory’s plantation was no longer profitable during the Civil War and the abolition of slavery. He moved away, and over time the house fell into disrepair. In 1935 the Civilian Conservation Corps disassembled the entire building and moved it across the river to its present location in the park. The Hammock Landing Battery was located on the bluff behind the current location of the house but the trail was closed on the day I visited. There is a sign describing the battery at the trail head.
