Ulysses S. Grant Cottage Race – Community Day at Saratoga Race Track

Here’s an annual event that I was completely unaware of. Yesterday while I was watching the Saratoga horse races on television I saw this scene in the winner’s circle after the fifth race. The Grant Cottage sponsored the 2nd annual Ulysses S. Grant Cottage Race. The Grant Cottage is on my bucket list of places I need to visit. On General Grant’s left is his wife, Julia, and on his right is the jockey of the winner of the 5th race Flavien Prat. They are joined by seven reenactors. There’s a nice post on the Grant Cottage blog about Grant and racing and his relationship with horses (link).

I haven’t been to Saratoga in many years. I really need to try and get back. Here’s one of my favorite moments from the track there on September 5, 2009. The three-year-old filly Rachel Alexandra beats older horses in the Grade 1 Woodward on her way to being named Horse of the Year, photos taken by me.
