Below is my itinerary from a trip to the Hilton Head Island area. When my wife, dog and I go on these trips I’m looking for a place within an hour or less drive to all the sites we want to visit, which for me includes Civil War sites and for my wife includes independent book stores, wineries, beaches and towns I think she would like to see, which on this trip included Bluffton and Beaufort. We would be staying within walking distance of Burke’s Beach on Hilton Head. Posts from this trip, as well as other battles in SC will begin to appear in January.
Saturday- arrive at 5 Seafront Lane

Sunday- Mitchelville (revisit- Harriet Tubman statue, Mitchelville frame town and Planter exhibit), Fort Howell (revisit- South Bastion and interior), Coastal Discovery Museum (first visit). I was going to Mitchelville to reshoot some signs and didn’t realize the Tubman statue had been moved here.

Monday- Beach, Bluffton and the Heyward Museum (first visit)

Tuesday- Beaufort (Tubman monument, Civil War hospitals and homes), and independent bookstores. Getting better pictures of the remaining 14 of 15 structures used as Civil War hospitals was another major goal.

Wednesday- Port Royal Plantation Forts Walker and Sherman (revisit- tour through the Coastal Discovery Museum ticket required, must purchase online), Stoney-Baynard Ruins and Harbour Town at Sea Pines Plantation which is gated $9 entrance fee. The Coastal Discovery Museum tour and revisit to Fort Sherman was a major goal of the trip. Fort Sherman is very well preserved.

Thursday- Beaufort (finish Civil War hospitals and homes), Parris Island Museum (first visit- requires background check at the gate and a car search allowed 30 minutes for this), Honey Hill battlefield tour with Richard Thomas and Stephen Wise (arranged through the Friends of Honey Hill). The third major goal was a trip to Honey Hill. A big thank you to Richard Thomas and Stephen Wise for showing me around the battlefield and Boyd’s Landing. They and the Friends of Honey Hill are doing great work there with more to come in the future. The Parris Island Museum has a very nice exhibit on local battles in the war.

Friday- Beach and relax. I did not return to Fort Mitchel as I had good pictures from a previous visit.

Saturday- return home
