Coastal Discovery Museum- Hilton Head, SC

The Coastal Discovery Museum was established in 1985. Their mission is to inspire people to care for the Lowcountry through programs that explore the region’s history, culture, art, and fragile coastal environment. In 2007, the museum moved to Historic Honey Horn—70 acres of preserved land with historic buildings, nature trails, maritime forest, boardwalks, a butterfly habitat, salt marsh, dragonfly pond, and a large, covered pavilion. The museum also runs a tour in the fall and winter to the Civil War forts on Port Royal Plantation- Fort Walker and Fort Sherman. It is the only way to see these forts unless you are a guest of a resident who lives in the gated complex where the forts are located.

Admission to the museum is free. Donations help them maintain the museum and grounds, preserve historic buildings and collections, and protect the plants and wildlife that make this region unique. They also have a small gift shop.
