Battery White, Georgetown, SC- Old Newspaper Stories

For the second straight year a large winter storm has struck coastal South Carolina. This one a “bomb cyclone” could be even larger than last year’s storm that dumped 5 inches of snow on the Grand Strand. A minor event for those of you from Buffalo, NY, or other parts of the northeast, midwest or mountain west but Charlie the Westie is no fan of snow. Shown below is his favorite thing to do in snow or rain.

So while Charlie the Westie snoozes away let’s look up some old newspaper articles on Battery White from 1863 to 2011. We start with a shipwreck in 1863 where members of the battery were captured, and move through the offering of rewards for deserters, the history of Belle Isle, the first marker placed on the site, early attempts to preserve the battery, its placement on the National Record of Historic places, the development of the area around the fort, the establishment of a conservation easement, to the modern day with a couple of articles on the USS Harvest Moon thrown in. Not a complete collection by any means but an interesting hodgepodge of articles from local papers. Something to read until all this snow finally melts.

The Charleston Daily Courier, September 10, 1863, page 2. There were many individual adds in the courier offering rewards for deserters from the battery. I show this one because it was the largest.
