I was able to find two newspaper articles filed by the New York Daily Herald’s Naval Correspondent where the correspondent was imbedded with Cushing’s men in 1862! The first was published on November 15, 1862 and involved the destruction of a Confederate salt work inside New Topsail Inlet north of Wilmington, North Carolina. The second was published on December 4, 1862. It describes in detail the New River Expedition which will be covered in a future post.
