The Onslow County Museum and Lt. William Barker Cushing

The Onslow County Museum is located at 301 S Wilmington Street in Richlands, NC. It is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM and Saturday from 10:00:AM to 4:00 PM. The museum is unique in that it has a display dedicated to the Battle of New River. The raid was led by Naval Lieutenant William Barker Cushing, referred to by Secretary of the Navy Gideon Welles as the “hero of the war”. It also has a research library that has one of the few copies of a monograph on the battle written by Lieutenant Colonel Lynn Kimball.
