Jeffersonton Baptist Church

The Jeffersonton Baptist Church is the second oldest Baptist Church in Culpeper County. First located near Kelly’s Ford, it relocated to Freeman’s Ford, and in 1819 to Jeffersonton. In Colonial times two important roads passed through Jeffersonton the Great Wagon Road, which ran from Chester’s Gap to Falmouth, and the Piedmont Stage Road from Washington to Milledgeville, Georgia. During the First Battle of Rappahannock Station skirmishes took place on the grounds of the Church, which also served as a field hospital. On October 12, 1863, another battle was fought in the Jeffersonton and Fauquier White Sulphur Springs area during the Bristoe Station Campaign when Lee once again turned the right flank of the Army of the Potomac this time under the command of George Meade. Soldiers from both battles are buried in the church cemetery.

The Church

There are at least 42 unknown soldiers buried in the cemetery.

I found six known Confederates that are also buried here (there may be more if they did not have conventional military headstones). All but one died after the war. First Lieutenant Lewis Feuilleteau Wilson died during the Battle of Jeffersonton during the Bristoe Station Campaign on October 12, 1863.
