An article from the Virginian Pilot- Fort Monroe unveils a new statue of the arrival of North America’s first enslaved Africans. “It depicts Isabella Tucker, cradling her son William Tucker, and stands in the center of the plaza. Husband Antoney Tucker embraces them both. They stand at the tip of an arrow pointing from Fort Monroe across the Atlantic Ocean back toward Africa’s West Coast.” “Antoney and Isabella were two of about 30 surviving Africans who arrived at Point Comfort’s shores in 1619. The pair were taken from Angola, where the Portuguese forced 350 or so people from its West Africa Angola colony bound for New Spain along the newly established trans-Atlantic slave trade. Roughly half did not survive the voyage, and two privateer vessels captured 60 others, including Antoney and Isabella.”
